Well, what most people knew.
Today, a new US report has found that it is extremely likely that climate change is manmade. Put together by over 50 climate scientists, the report suggests that there is a 95% certainty that humans are causing the climate change that we see today; mostly through carbon emissions through the burning of coal, oil and natural gas.
In what you’d imagine would be a blow to the climate change deniers currently occupying the White House, the report also highlights a number of ‘tipping points’ of dangers that could occur because of the warming that is seen on land and in oceans. These ‘tipping points’ are possible large events that could have huge impacts on the global climate. Examples include the slowing of the North Atlantic circulation, release of carbon dioxide and methane from thawing permafrost, and stronger El Nino events.
To most of us, this is not really any new information. Scientists have been aware of the impact humans are having on the climate for many years and the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly observable. The evidence is almost overwhelming and there are more than enough reasons for us to take action and find ways to mitigate and adapt to the changes we’re seeing. As the phrase goes, ‘the cost of inaction far outweighs the cost of action.’
If anyone was looking for Trump, Pruitt or Perry, they’re probably still burying their heads in the sand…
